Research from the European Central Bank (ECB) shows that consumer demand is a bigger driver of inflation in the United States than in the euro area. The study expects underlying price pressures in the euro area to remain weaker.
The ECB’s Economic Bulletin said the main driver of recent higher headline inflation in the euro area was higher energy prices. Fundamental price pressures have risen more slowly in the single currency area than in the US, however, and are expected to remain low in the short term.
